Artist Ideas - Martin Garrix (Jacob Sanderson)

On tuesday we created our groups for our music videos, I am in a group with John and Liam I was in a group with them last year and because I have experience with them already I believe we will have an advantage when completing our music video. We had to create a mood board on the different styles of music we could do for our video. I decided to put forward the idea of Dance/Progressive house music as I believe it has a lot of potential in music videos.

A song that stands out for me which I believe could be used as our song is Martin Garrix - Golden Skies. This song is a progressive house song and has alot of vocals in it. I like the idea of this song since its vocals can be shown very easily visually and a narrative can be built around them.

Im going to be highlighting the artist Martin Garrix as he has had a lot of success in his dance music videos.

Martin Garrix is an 18 year old DJ who rose to fame quickly in 2013 with his hit single 'Animals' which hit number one in more than ten countries. Martin Garrix reached the status of #4 best DJ in the world in DJ mags top 100 this year. At 18 he is the youngest successful DJ of all time.

This poster is an example of one of Martin Garrix's tour posters for America. The poster is pretty simple as it lists the location and dates of his shows on the right side in clear writing with a picture of him next to the locations. The poster is white black and green, these colours would stand out to anyone walking past. I believe the poster is simple and gets to the point which is to promote his gigs.

This is the cover album of Martins first album 'Animals'. The cover features a white lion on a black background. The lion is related to the name of the album which is 'animals'. This album is really basic as it only displays a picture of a lion and the artists name and recording label. The fact the cover album is so simple shows that he does not need it to stand out since it will be successful just from word of mouth.

This is a picture of Martin Garrix performing at a live show. A picture like this would most likely be used on his social networks to show the fun and energy at his gigs. This will promote more people to want to go to his events if they see the crowd and artist having fun.

This is Martin Garrix's music video for his song 'Wizard'. The video shows the artist traveling and performing his song in front of crowds. I believe the purpose of this video is to show people how fun his gigs while showing off his new song. The video is full of energy and happiness with people dancing. The video has no narrative or meaning it just promotes his new song and makes people want to go to his shows.

This is a short documentary on the 18 year old DJ.

Artist Ideas: Tiesto (Liam Parkinson)

Tijs Michiel Verwest better known by his stage name Tiësto is a Dutch DJ Formerly known as DJ Tiësto. He is now known simply as "Tiësto", an artist name that is a twist of his childhood nickname.

In 1997, he founded the label Black Hole Recordings with Arny Bink, where he released the Magik and In Search of Sunrise CD series. In 1999 and 2000 Tiësto collaborated with Ferry Corsten to create Gouryella. His 2000 remix of Delerium's "Silence" featuring Sarah McLachlan exposed him to more mainstream audiences. In 2001, he released his first solo album, In My Memory, the title track a remix of an original song written by and featuring Nicola Hitchcock, this album gave him several major hits that launched his career. He ranked at #1 on DJ Magazine's annual Top 100 DJs Poll consecutively for three years from 2002 to 2004.

Today Tiësto produces progressive house music, despite being around for over 20 years he is still one of the biggest DJ’s in the world. Tiësto has been the platform for modern day house/dance music as he made the transition from “Trance” to what it is today.

Artist Ideas: Hardwell (Jacob Sanderson)

Today in lesson we created a diagram which split our ideas up into more detail so that we can make a more informed decision on what song we will be doing for our music video. This is our diagram with the choices that me and Liam have come up with.

I wrote down the dance music ideas and have come up with the suggestion to do "Young Again" by Hardwell, this is because this song has good lyrics in it and sounds like a crossover genre where we could get some good ideas together to make a video.

This is an example of a poster for a Hardwell tour poster. It is a cartoon version of Hardwell with his name and tour dates and locations on. The colours and style used has made it look like there are strobe lights behind the artist which I thought was good because at live performances you expect to see a lot of lighting used so it all fits in with the genre of dance music.

This is an album cover for Hardwell, it features a picture of the artist and artist name but the background has a lot to do with space. This is in relevance to the names of the songs on this album such as "Spaceman" and "Apollo" which relate to the theme of space so this album is a representation of this.

This picture is taken from a live performance that Hardwell, this is the sort of image that the tour poster has taken inspiration from as this is the sort of view you would expect to see at any sort of DJ performance particularly in this genre.

This is the music video for "Apollo" by Hardwell, the video does not have much to do with the lyrics but I found that the video was very simple and there are parts of the video that relate to the theme of space which is where the video has relevance to the album that it is from.

This is a video from Hardwell's set at Tomorrowland 2014, this is the sort of environment that you would expect to see from this style of performance. It is a very loud genre that uses a lot of strobe lighting and pyrotechnics which makes it a very bright genre. In this video there are a lot of good examples of filming techniques such as crane shots, long shots, close ups, handheld, zoom in and zoom out.

Hardwell is a DJ from the Netherlands and was the number 1 DJ of 2013. He  found his love for music at the age of 8 and at age 13 began remixing popular songs at the time. He is currently a progressive house DJ and producer, he broke his way into this scene back in 2009 with his Bootleg remix of "Show Me Love vs Be". Since this he has produced his own material such as "Spaceman" and "Apollo" and made collaborations and toured with Tiesto. In his earlier years when he performed live, he was too young to get into the clubs where he played so he would have to be escorted by his parents. He is now 24 and often headlines major events around the world and is considered one of the world's best DJs.

Hardwell now hosts his own radio show which is now also a podcast which is aired every friday night called "Hardwell On Air". His music is sold online through iTunes and Beatport, however a lot of downloads are often free and he makes his living through ticket sales from live performances and festival appearances.

Filming Styles (Liam Parkinson)

For our music video, we are looking at different types of filming that we can use in our video. Two types of filming that we have looked at using so far are time lapse clips and underwater clips. We have access to equipment that will allow us to film underwater so therefore we are going to see whether there is going to be a place for this to be used in our video somewhere. Here is an example of each of these styles that we have filmed to test out what each would potentially look like.

This is a time lapse of me riding home from a few nights ago, this was done purely as a test to see what a time lapse would come out looking like.

This video is from when john was on holiday in Michigan. This clip was filmed in Lake Michigan and it was a test of how well john's waterproof equipment worked, this is something that we are looking at finding ideas for because it could be useful for our music video.

Group Blog Introduction (Jacob Sanderson/Liam Parkinson)

This is the group blog of Liam Parkinson, Jacob Sanderson and John Masters. Prior to setting up this blog we have had a couple of meetings where we have discussed out own personal musical interests and have started to piece together genres of music to make a decision of what song we are going to make a music video for.

This was the first mood board that we created as a group where we chose the genres of music that we each liked. This gave us a vague idea of what we were looking at when choosing a song. In this selection there are some similar and some very different genres so we decided that we would need to have another meeting to cut down the variety.

This is the second meeting that we had as a group. We managed to separate the genres and link artists and specific songs in. Here, we also decided that we will definitely not be doing an R&B song because no group members have a strong interest which would make it hard to create ideas for and we will not be doing pop because we will be too influenced by current music videos and it would make our video too similar to an existing video. We're going to go with dance music because we have already thought of a few good ideas for styles of filming and mise-en-scene which we think will allow us to create an industry standard music video.
